Forklift Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts must be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety procedures should be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is very essential to check fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is essential for workers working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG comprise safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be located near the charging area. The path to the post must not be blocked and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While in the vicinity of a battery and charging area, open fire are not allowed. Do not permit objects such as matches or lighters to be used when somebody is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging area properly ventilated. The recharging process could cause fumes to be released. These gases are both poisonous and explosive.
